ABSTRACT:
Urinary stone disease remains a recurrent renal disorder that can lead to significant morbidity and deterioration of kidney function. The research was aimed to investigate the protective potential of the hydroalcoholic extract of Momordica dioica fruits (HAEMD) against experimental urolithiasis. In the first instance, phytochemical analysis highlighted the presence of phytoconstituents such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. Antiurolithiatic activity was assessed through calcium oxalate crystal nucleation and dissolution studies, followed by evaluation in an ethylene glycol-induced rat model. HAEMD exhibited a marked ability to inhibit crystal nucleation and facilitated the dissolution of calcium oxalate crystals under in vitro conditions. Administration of the extract in experimental animals significantly restored altered urinary and serum biochemical parameters, reduced renal crystal burden, and improved kidney function when compared with untreated urolithiatic rats. Microscopic examination of renal tissues demonstrated a substantial reduction in crystal-induced damage and preservation of normal renal morphology. The beneficial effects observed may be due to the presence of the phytoconstituents of HAEMD. The overall findings provide experimental evidence supporting the antiurolithiatic potential of Momordica dioica fruits and suggest their possible application as a plant based-therapeutic strategy for prevention and urinary stone management.
