ABSTRACT:
In the traditional system of medicines in India, different parts of the plant Holostemma annulare (Roxb) K. Schum (HA) have been traditionally claimed to have medicinal properties. Of this plant 34 medicinal preparations are used. The roots of the Holostemma annulare (Roxb) K. Schum have been reported to possess anti inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and anti-diabetic activity without noticable toxicity. The present study has been undertaken in order to evaluate the analgesic activity of alcoholic, aqueous and benzene extract of roots of plant Holostemma annulare (Roxb) K. Schum using acetic acid induced writhing test.
The two doses of 300mg/kg and 600mg/kg of body weight were prepared by dissolving in water. A minimum four animals were used for each group including control, standard group receiving drug Diclofenac sodium intraperitoneally and test groups receiving different extracts of Holostemma annulare (Roxb) K. Schum roots at doses 300mg/kg and 600mg/kg orally.
It was concluded that the aqueous extract of dose 300 mg/body wt. and 600mg/body wt. has shown a significant analgesic activity. Alcoholic and Benzene extract of roots were devoid of any analgesic activity at the dose level of 300mg/body wt., but showed a significant analgesic activity at the dose of 600mg/body wt.
In this study the results indicated that the roots of the plant Holostemma annulare (Roxb) K. Schum possesses a significant analgesic activity
